Fall is just around the corner, which means it’s time to think about Fall Pre-emergent weed control. Weeds are categorized as either broad leaf or grassy type weeds. A Pre-Emergent herbicide controls unwanted weeds and grasses by targeting the weed seed just before or immediately after the seed begins to germinate. When using Pre-Emergent products be sure to read all labels for turf and ornamental applications. Generally most pre-emergents are safe to use around established trees and shrubs as well as most ground cover. A pre-emergent should never be used in areas where seeds or bulbs have been planted or will be in the near future.

Some of the most common weeds in North Texas Lawns are:

* Chickweed-broad-leaf weed
* Clover-broad-leaf weed
* Crabgrass-grassy weed
* Dandelions-broad-leaf weed
* Grass-burs-grassy weed
* Johnson grass-grassy weed
* Nut-grass/ Nut-sedge-grassy weed

Pre-Emergent weed controls are used to prevent weed seeds from germinating, or to kill young emerging weeds before they become established full-grown weeds. Pre-emergent weed controls are not effective in controlling actively growing or already established weeds. To prevent grassy weeds and broad-leaf weeds in established lawns apply NOW for excellent control of most broad-leaf and grassy weeds.

Pre-emergent Herbicides are purchased in granular form and applied with a fertilizer spreader. Once the product has been applied, lightly water to move the product from the leaf blades and down to the soil level where the weed seeds are located.

Nature’s Guide Corngluten Meal:

For an organic alternative to pre-emergent weed control we recommend Natures Guide Corn Gluten meal. This product not only prevents weeds but will also give the turf a quick nitrogen feeding. The protein content in the corn gluten kills the germinating weed seeds. One 40 lb. Bag will treat 2,000 square feet. Corn gluten meal significantly reduces plant survival, inhibits shoot length and discourages root development of all tested species. Corn gluten meal applied to the soil inhibits root formation of germinating seeds. Without roots the plants cannot survive .
