Snapdragon Product Description
Getting their names from their resemblance to the face of a dragon that opens and closes when the blooms are lightly pinched laterally, snapdragons are a fall garden favorite! The “mouth” of the blooms also moves like this when they are being pollinated.
Widely used in fall gardens as ornamentals or border flowers, snapdragons, or “dragon flowers,” are perfect for temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Snapdragons are a beautiful addition to any Southerner’s fall garden because of their pink, red, yellow, and orange colors that are brightly showcased in their upright blooms.
Snapdragons care: These late fall/early winter annuals are available in an assortment of colors including orange, red, white, yellow, and bi-color selections. Annual: sizes range from 8-10” tall x 12” wide. Snapdragons prefer full sun to part shade and are perfect for container gardens. Because of their ability to thrive in cooler weather, snapdragons don’t like high heat and may cease blooming altogether when the temperatures get too hot. However, in cooler climates, snapdragons may keep their blooms all summer long.
Snapdragons prefer rich, well-draining soil that’s exposed to a lot of sunlight. To keep your blooms robust, deadhead the spent flowers from the plant.
