Sunlight Requirements
In the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area, moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora) needs at least 6 to 8 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight daily to thrive and bloom to its full potential.Because it is a desert-native succulent, it absolutely craves the sun. However, growing it in North Texas comes with a couple of specific local nuances:Morning Sun is Best: The closer you can get to 8+ hours, the happier the plant will be. Ideally, place it where it gets blasted by morning and early afternoon sun. The flowers literally open with the morning light and close as evening approaches (or on heavy overcast days). The “DFW August” Factor: While moss rose loves intense heat, the brutal triple-digit July and August afternoons in DFW can occasionally bleach the blooms or cause the succulent leaves to scorch if the soil dries out completely. While full sun is recommended, providing a spot that receives morning sun and just a hint of light, dappled shade or relief from the blistering 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM sun can actually keep the plant looking a bit more lush through the peak of summer. If it gets less than 6 hours, the vine will start to look “leggy” or stretched out, and the signature vibrant, rose-like flowers will remain tightly closed or won’t form at all.
